Definition: An adjective that refers to an individual whose company other people want to avoid since his/her choice of words or actions bring about irritation and dislike. It is a fitting description to those who are unaware that their personality causes discomfort to those human beings they are constantly with. There may be times that these people are accepted, but then, there is always a point where they cross the line. Read the rest of this entry »

I have always been one to believe that words are arbitrary and opinions are relative. A ball is a ball only because we say it’s a ”ball”, but when it’s flattened, is it still considered a ball? What makes up a ball and how can one say that something is a ball? Can a snob be a ball because it’s made of plastic? Can a politician be a ball because it’s round? Can gangstas be balls because they bounce? Notice how words can mean different things as well. To put things in the language of an academe, words and meanings do not exhibit what one would call a one-to-one relationship. So what is a word and how does it work?It doesn’t. The German poet Goethe once said that “he who cannot draw on three thousand years is living from hand to mouth.” Three thousand years is already a gold mine to draw knowledge from. What more if it is possible to draw from the memory of our whole species? The collective unconscious is a term coined by Carl Jung to describe a “reservoir of the experiences of our species.” Sadly, I think that to be able to acquire these memories consciously is still impossible. We’re not even sure if the collective unconscious actually exists. But its existence and our innate ability to acquire memories from our collective unconscious involuntarily are things that I believe to be true.

Somewhere in this world, there exists seas separated by barriers of crystal. The seas are so cold that one can feel its chilly atmosphere from the other side of these enclosures. Each sea had a distinct color, smell, and taste. For example, the murky, brown sea resembles the taste of coffee, while the transparent, yellow sea hinted the fragrance of Calamansi and the sweetness of honey. A sip from any of these seas is said to bring forth rejuvenation to the drinker’s body.
These seas are ruled by a queen. There is a flood whenever she sends more water cascading from her jug. Hailstones the size of glaciers fall from the sky when she feels that the water is not cold enough. The glaciers collide with each other when her mighty curved scepter moves across the waters. She also offers a portion of any sea under her domain for a price.
Would you believe that she is only eighteen years old?

Have you ever experienced this moment when we feel that what we are experiencing now has been experienced before? That feeling, or the phenomena itself is called deja vu. What is deja vu? What is deja vu? it means “already seen”. Simple right? Nothing special about deja vu, all people have experienced this phenomenon. But what if you suddenly experienced deja vu, however, the memory of a dream comes flooding out of your brain, giving you the deja vu feeling? Now that is weird. The said phenomenon is called deja reve, meaning “already dreamt”. In other words, you just dreamt of the future. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing prophetic about these things. Most of the accounts are of everyday routines, like doing your thing (e.g. brushing teeth, washing face, not those things you green person) , looking outside the window, or talking to friends. It could be coincidence, but I do believe that people can dream of the future.

What changes the world?
With the common knowledge of natural processes aside, the possible true things that give shape to mankind and his inhabiting planet are the “what if…”s and “suppose…”s that he comes up with in pursuit of development and convenience. We, human beings, have increased the rate change with our propagating ideas and evolving creativity. Although it is difficult—and perhaps impossible—to prove, I believe that human thought is a form of energy.

“I’m OK. You don’t have to worry about me. *insert a smile*”
My dear reader, how familiar is this statement to you? I’m sure every one of us has used this line at least more than once in our life. And I’m also willing to bet my life that we’ve never really meant it at the time. Sometimes, we prefer to put up a wall of perfect happiness just to keep people from seeing the hurt and mixed up emotions we’ve bottled inside of our beings. It seems to us an act of being unselfish, since we do this to keep others from being muddled up with our confusing self.

I tried to think of something metaphysical, but nothing came to me except for a few integral signs and solids revolving on and on and on and on…and then I got this instant message from a UP friend: “Dawn, see you tomorrow sa rally :)).” Then I thought, If ever I had the courage to face teargas and batons, she’d definitely see me, but not on the same side. There is an 18-year-old young woman who serves her stall faithfully with a ladle and a hairnet; she earns from the hours of many punch and iced tea variants—all chilled just how customers love them. Life is a juice box behind her sticky cafeteria counter, and such a world seems so mundane from the other side of the plastic cup. Nevertheless, it is still a world of worthy stories—those of Marie Pilar: the juice lady.
